Down through the years many famous people have been captivated by the magnificence of the breed. The German Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck, had a great love for the breed and throughout his life was never without a Great Dane by his side. Buffalo Bill, often told stories of his beloved "Turk", a big black. Although he died when Bill was only a boy, the dog's qualities left a lasting impression on him. Buffalo Bill travelled the world in later years with his famous Wild West Show, always accompanied by a Great Dane. Barbara Woodhouse in later years - the "walkies" lady and "Juno" her famous Great Dane, have kept the breed in the limelight, in the movies and on TV. We can in Australia trace the ancestry of the breed in this country back to some of the great early European and American Champions of yesteryear.
The Great Dane is a dog of multifaceted character and very adaptable. He will fit in with most domestic situations, BUT if left to his own devices and ignored, he will become destructive, noisy and a pest to all. If you are contemplating owning a Great Dane, please think long and hard about your decision. There are many Great Danes throughout the world in Rescues and Pounds because people thought they would buy a Great Dane. If you are NOT prepared to share your life and family with your dog, DON'T BUY ONE!!! If you think that you can make lots of money breeding them, THINK AGAIN, the veterinary costs can be enormous when something goes wrong, and then of course you have to find good homes for the babies and if you can't sell them, can you afford to feed a litter of Great Danes for months??? So, if you have giving the matter careful thought, decided that that cute baby who will grow into a giant with a furniture rearranging tail is the one for you, and you are prepared to love, exercise and commit to this animal for life, then welcome to the world of a Great Dane!!! |
